A federal probation officer accused of five counts of child molestation was acquitted today on one of those felony charges, but a Shasta County jury was unable to reach a decision on the remaining four. Although the forewoman of the six-man, six-woman jury said it was "hopelessly" deadlocked on those four child molestation counts, she noted that it leaned heavily toward acquittal on all of them. Votes cast by the jury show it was 9-3 in favor of acquittal on two of the deadlocked counts, as well as 11

A Shasta County jury said today it has reached a verdict on one of five felony child molestation counts in the trial of a federal probation officer, but deadlocked on the four remaining counts. The jury's forewoman, however, said jurors might still possibly reach verdicts on those four hung counts in the case against Joseph Nicholas Gama of Redding. "I think possibly with further instruction on the law something might change," she told Superior Court Judge Bradley Boeckman.

Attorneys Wednesday delivered lengthy closing arguments in the trial of Joseph Nicholas Gama, 46, of Redding, describing him in entirely different lights. Shasta County Deputy District Attorney Ben Hanna portrayed Gama as a sexual predator who behind closed doors preyed upon vulnerable young girls who trusted him.

The veteran tree service owner couldn't help but admire the majestic Scotch pine when he drove by it on West Maple Road. It stood tall and large, a nearly perfect shape, despite many springs of straight-line winds and pounding hail and winters of snow that might have bent or broken less-sturdy stock. But despite how it looked, the tree in the middle of Prospect Hill Cemetery was dead. Pine wilt disease did what the weather couldn't do.
